You
may have thought that buying an outdoor
bench would be an extremely simple task, but there
are actually quite a few things that you may want to consider before
taking the plunge and buying your self an outdoor bench for your
lawn, patio, or garden.
For one thing, you want to make sure that any outdoor benches that
you buy are suited to the place you are going to be putting it.
For instance, if you are planning on placing your outdoor bench
in a place where it will get wet (not under an overhang, in the
line of a sprinkler, etc), then you want to make sure that it will
not stay wet.
It is not very pleasant to sit down in a puddle! So, ideally, the
seat of such an outdoor bench will have a slight slope toward the
backrest which will allow water to run off while keeping your bench
comfortable.
Also, while you are checking out the seats of outdoor benches,
be sure to sit in them! You will likely find that an outdoor bench
with slats that are close together is more comfortable than one
that has them far apart. Also, you will notice that a concrete bench
is going to feel much cooler on your posterior than a wooden one
in the morning, and a metal one will likely feel much hotter on
a summer afternoon.
While you are giving outdoor benches a “sit” to see
how comfortable they are, also be sure to pay attention to the backrest
if there is one. Be sure that the backrest comes up to your shoulders.
There are a variety of backrests on outdoor benches that you can
choose from – there are ones that are rigidly upright and
some that recline greatly as well as curved backrests and tall backrests
that offer a place to rest your head and neck. Be sure to check
out which ones are most comfortable for your body type.
It is nice to have a beautiful outdoor bench in your yard, but
it is even nicer if you are able to choose one that is extremely
comfortable. Another thing that you should consider is the armrests
of outdoor benches. Be sure to find an armrest that is just the
right height for your arms to rest on with just a 90 degree bend
in the elbow. Also, you ought to pick an armrest that is wider –
it is more comfortable, and it offers a place for you to rest not
just your arm, but your drink, as well.
Overall comfort is, of course, key, so be sure to “try out”
multiple outdoor benches before you choose one. Make sure that you
give yourself time to try each one out – sit in each outdoor
bench for 5 minutes and make sure that it is as comfortable as you
could hope or imagine. Have someone else along, too, to try it out,
since a bench is often an item that many different people will get
a chance to use and share.
Also, check and see if there are any screws sticking out or splinters
or other protuberances that may make the bench less comfortable.
There are so many things to consider when choosing an outdoor bench.
We have not even begun to mention the different styles of outdoor
benches or designs or materials (and believe me, there are a lot).
Perhaps, for you, the “look” of your outdoor bench
is even more important that the comfort that it offers. Perhaps
your idea of an outdoor bench is that it should be more of a decoration
to add to a garden, and you really will not be sitting on it for
more than a few minutes at a time, and rarely at that.
Good luck searching for outdoor benches!
