Oak
benches are beautiful additions to any garden. Why
not sit under your favorite old oak tree on an oak bench?
If properly cared for and treated, oak benches can last a lifetime.
Just think about how old your oak tree is! Just as that oak tree
can stand up to many storms and many years of sun and all kinds
of weather, oak benches can, too.
The natural characteristics of oak make it an excellent source
for outdoor furniture. Oak benches have a longevity that other benches
just may not have. Oak benches also tend to be decay resistant.
Of course, as strong and durable as oak benches are, it is still
best to store them indoors during the winter. By taking good care
of your oak bench, you can ensure that it is an item that you will
be able to pass down from generation to generation.
How can you take good care of your oak benches? Well, oak is a
close grain hardwood. As such, it is normal for an untreated oak
bench to get small cracks and splits (these are usually and especially
on the end grain). In fact, if your oak bench is left untreated
and then exposed to the elements, such cracks can occur within even
just a few weeks.
When exposed to the elements, natural minerals and oils in the
wood evaporate. When you treat your oak bench, though, you can lock
these natural oils and minerals into the bench.
Also, to ensure that your oak benches last as long as you do, you
will want to wipe them clean at least once a month.
So, to keep your oak benches lasting as long as your old oak tree,
you need to be sure to store them in the winter, treat them with
an excellent sealer, and clean them every so often.
Yes, oak benches are great for standing up to the elements, but
only if you help them out a little!
